The Lunchtime Experience
FPR Community Radio-Summer 2008
Pics - Gordon Newlands: IrnwurksMedia Week 2
After a welcome start to the first week of the 2008 Summer Season, we went into the second week with enthusiasm and confidence, especially as for the first time in ages, we were to have special guests in the studio for a change.
In what was to be an eventful week, this was to be where we broke new ground for the show, with a top Scottish Comic and our first ever live unplugged session from top Glasgow Band, "Trade".
How we would fit them into our little hi tech broom cupboard would be an achievement.
Monday
Our guest on Monday was Raymond Mearns, who is regular on the comedy club circuit as well as an established actor.
Having chatted to him before the show, he said that he had recently done a corporate show at Jongleurs Comedy Club in Edinburgh where he ripped by gaffers to shreds.
Oh how I was desperate to get some juicy gossip to take into the work the next day, but I would not dare use it on air.
He came in with a reputation as a comic who "knows how to swear properly", but this was a professional who not only was a stalwart of comedy clubs, but also radio, and cruise ships, so he knew what the limitations were.
And the fact that he had his son with him, you knew that he was not going to over step the mark.
The fact that we talked about the format of the show certainly helped us get off to a flying start, where Ray had us in hysterics talking about all aspects in his career and about a whole range of subjects, from American Football to the price of a tin of beans at a well known discount store.
That was the first hour take care off, still two hours to go.
The second hour, we tapped into the benefit of his experience as a comedian and as an actor, who has worked with some of the UK's top film makers. As Mike was desperate for work himself, it was too good an opportunity to pass up.
By the third hour, both me an Mike ran dry as we could not think of anything new to say, but Raymond the comedian became Ray the DJ as along with his son ( a keen DJ in he making himself) took over our play list.
As a result, the Lunchtime Experience turned into the Monday Rock Show. But it was still fun!
Wednesday
It was the day for the two Michaels as Mike was joined by Ray's son, who wanted to get more experience in working in a studio. Just the type of thing we like - an able volunteer - free of charge.
But the major talking point was that we set a new record with our first ever batch of text messages.
Twenty to be exact.
OK they are all from the same person, but that is just nit picking.
Friday
This was an historical day in the history of the Lunchtime Experience as we were to have our first ever live unplugged session in our show.
We had never done anything like this before and wondered how we would fit a whole band into our hi tech broom cupboard.
We sometimes can't fit ourselves in sometimes.
The band in question were a top Glasgow Combo called "Trade", who despite not signed to any labels, have built up a substantial following at venues around the city.
Despite working in normal jobs during the day, the line up of Mark, Ryan, Div and Barry have played some prestigious venues like "The Barrowlands" as support for "Stiff Little Fingers".
And on this day, they came into our humble little studio armed to teeth with two acoustic guitars, one tambourine,a drum box ( I have got to get me one of those) and one agent.
Better know as a business associate of mine who having worked together for over ten years, it was one the rare occassions where I got to see him in a suit.
We were treated to three of their own compositions along with a special inpromptue version a John Cash Classic song.
Not only was a session was a success, we were told that the guys enjoyed listening to a recording of it heading back home.
We hope to have the guys in again to the studio - either at FPR or at Pulse FM if we get the go ahead.
